lyrics

'97

We were hanging at our friend’s house bored to death
The only sound was coming from the tv set
That’s when Eddie said “let’s get out of here”
So we left and we went to grab a beer

On the boardwalk it was a hot and humid night
We passed the fortune teller she was such a fright
But it looked really cool inside her air conditioned room
So we went inside to see if we were doomed

Oh fortune teller don’t come up to me
Don’t tell me things that I don’t want to know
Oh fortune teller stay away from me
With your one eye and crumpled hand and vacant empty stare

So we pushed Eddie down now he’s sitting in the chair
His face turned a ghastly ghoulish white
Then she dealt the cards and she gave a toothless grin
It’s not what Eddie wanted to hear (she said)

Beware 1997
Beware ‘97
‘cause you are going to die

That’s when Eddie freaked and he bolted out of there
We all went home and never got that beer
The year back then was 1993
In 4 more years we’ll have to wait and see

Oh fortune teller, don’t come up to me
Don’t tell me things that I don’t want to hear
Oh fortune teller, stay away from me
With your one eye and crumpled hand and vacant empty stare

1997 came and went
Eddie was still alive (he was still alive)
We celebrated on New Years Eve
But the next day we heard that Eddie died

Why oh why oh why
It was 1998 and that’s not what the creepy one eyed lady said
Why oh why oh why
We asked his mom who was so upset
She said he got hit by a ’97 Corvette
